I’m Lindsay, and I never fit into the traditional writing, editing, or publishing world.
I didn’t start The Awakened Press because I loved grammar drills or essay critiques.
I started it because real writing saved me.
I wasn’t the student with perfect MLA citations.
In fact, English class failed me in university.
Instead of unlocking my inner voice, the best traditional schooling in the world let me down.
In English 101 and in university, we students were taught how to critique creative writing, not BE the creative writers. This is not the right mindset if you are a creative visionary…the visionaries who CREATE and WRITE the books that are being critiqued!
I came from the creative side. The soul side. The side that invents fresh, new ways to tell stories.
In school, I experienced that creative writing was heavily judged only by traditional elites who had a particular tone and style that I could see would soon become outdated within a few years.
I was the one sitting in lecture halls feeling like my voice was being buried under rules and red pens.
The truth?
I almost gave up on writing altogether — until I realized the problem wasn’t me.
It was the system that made creativity feel like something to be corrected instead of created.
I WAS the visionary!
In 2009-2013 when I first got started with book publishing, publishers were trying to shut down Amazon publishing…a new industry at the time that I predicted would soon start taking over the world in terms of book sales and publishing. (The naysayers were wrong.)
I was one of the first publishers to use Amazon and online ways for publishing books when everyone else was calling me crazy. I only used traditional methods when it seriously worked (and still do, only when necessary).
